Au cours des derniers mois de sa vie, Catherine se rend quotidiennement à la basilique Saint-Pierre où elle passe des heures en prière devant la mosaïque de « la Navicella », le navire de l'Église. Juste avant le Carême de 1380, elle a une vision dans laquelle le navire est soulevé de la mosaïque et placé sur ses épaules. Trois mois plus tard, le 29 avril 1380, à l'âge de 33 ans, Catherine mourut, épuisée par ses pénitences et ses efforts au service du pape et de l'Église. « Ô Dieu éternel », avait-elle prié sur son lit de mort, « acceptez le sacrifice de ma vie pour le bien de ce corps mystique de la sainte Église ».<ref>Edmund G.
