Saint Bernadette
Bernadette Soubirous (1844-1879) était une paysanne pieuse à qui la Sainte Vierge est apparue à dix-huit reprises entre le 11 février et le 16 juillet 1858, alors qu'elle était âgée de 14 ans. Les apparitions ont eu lieu dans une grotte près de Lourdes, dans le sud de la France. Marie a exhorté Bernadette à « prier pour les pécheurs » et lui a lancé l'avertissement « Pénitence ! ». La grotte est aujourd'hui surmontée de l'église du Rosaire, qui contient de nombreuses béquilles et des offrandes commémorant les guérisons miraculeuses attribuées à Notre-Dame de Lourdes.
Les apparitions à Lourdes
Bernadette Soubirous était l'aînée d'une famille pauvre de meuniers du village de Lourdes, dans le sud-ouest de la France, au pied des Pyrénées. Le 11 février 1858, Bernadette ramassait du bois près d'une grotte rocheuse. Alertée par un bruit semblable à celui d'un orage, elle se tourna vers la grotte. Là, dans l'une des ouvertures du rocher, elle vit un rosier solitaire qui ondulait comme sous l'effet d'un vent secret. Un nuage doré se forma à cet endroit et peu après, une dame d'une beauté magnifique apparut au-dessus du rosier.
Elle semblait avoir seize ou dix-sept ans et était vêtue d'une longue robe blanche nouée à la taille par un ruban bleu fluide. Un long voile blanc recouvrait presque entièrement ses cheveux et tombait dans son dos jusqu'en dessous de sa taille. Ses pieds étaient nus, à l'exception des derniers plis de sa robe et des roses jaunes brillantes qui ornaient chacun d'eux. Sur son bras droit, elle portait un chapelet de perles blanches et une chaîne en or qui, comme les roses sur ses pieds, brillaient comme si elles étaient faites de soleil.
Bernadette prit son chapelet et s'agenouilla sur le sol. La Dame récita le chapelet en silence, mais pria à haute voix avec Bernadette chaque « Gloire au Père ». Bernadette ne savait pas encore avec qui elle priait. Lorsque le chapelet fut terminé, la Dame retourna dans le creux de la roche auréolé d'un nuage doré et disparut.
Marie rendit visite à l'enfant à dix-huit reprises dans la grotte. Bernadette reçut pour consigne d'apporter une bougie allumée lors de ses visites et de prier pour les pécheurs. Lors de la huitième visite, Marie l'exhorta en lui disant : « Pénitence ! Pénitence ! Miracles of healing
The pool that flowed to the hand of Bernadette at the command of beloved Mother Mary is charged with miraculous healing properties. Today its flowing waters minister to the mental, emotional, spiritual and physical needs of those who come in faith to bathe in its waters.
Some time after the pool appeared, a crippled man left his crutches propped against the grotto rock as a sign of his miraculous healing. Today thousands of crutches and candles blaze a message of gratitude for the merciful bounty of the Mother of God. An international board of medical examiners verifies the stream of legitimate healings that yet flows from the shrine of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception. Verified against the highest standards of professional inquiry, the healings at Mary’s fountain of living water continue to bear witness on earth of the eternal wisdom of our Father-Mother God in heaven.
Later life
Following the apparitions, Bernadette served as a Sister of Notre Dame at the Convent of Saint-Gildard, where for more than seven years she endured the painful and debilitating disease of tuberculosis of the bone. During the last two years of her life she developed a large tumor on her knee, which she kept a secret as long as she could so she would not be relieved of her duties. Her life is portrayed in the film The Song of Bernadette (1943) based on Franz Werfel’s novel by the same name.
The ascended lady master
Bernadette is now ascended. Bernadette has said that she made her ascension without ever having come to taste the fruits of this world. Even further, she never really knew about the wickedness, the degradation and the darkness of the world. From the time she was a child to the time of her ascension she dwelled in the innocence of God, thus proving that one does not have to have the wisdom of this world, one does not have to taste of the pleasures and the pain of this world in order to know God. She communed with the angels and with Mother Mary and lived a life of grace and purity. Only after she made her ascension and looked at the world was she apprised of this ugliness and its temptations.
